PennDOT heard many concerns from residents regarding pedestrian safety for adults and school children. The parkway could include signals with pedestrian buttons, crosswalks and pedestrian-scale lighting to enhance overall safety. Recreational paths or sidewalks could be provided along the new roadway. The existing path adjacent to the senior citizen apartments would be maintained, and designed to provide for safe crossings.
A sidewalk on the bridge over the CSX tracks would allow residents to safely walk to work or the charter school. Byberry Road could be restriped to include bicycle lanes. Additional features, such as raised crosswalks or curbed bump-outs at intersections to shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians, can make Byberry Road more pedestrian friendly.
These types of traffic calming measures can support a safer environment for all modes of travel.
