PENNDOT Announces Results of Woodhaven Road Survey

Citizens split on favorite options to improve traffic flow on Woodhaven Road Corridor

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (March 11, 2002) -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) today announced the results of a survey taken over the past month to gauge public opinion on the alternatives under consideration to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along Woodhaven Road Corridor in Northeast Philadelphia and Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County.

PENNDOT surveyed citizens to gain public insight on the alternatives under consideration. The survey results do not automatically eliminate any alternative or determine the future plan to improve traffic flow along the Woodhaven Road Corridor. PENNDOT will take this information under consideration as it determines the projectıs future course.

For the survey question, "What build alternative do you feel best warrants further study," 45 percent of the respondents favored the Woodhaven Road Extension alternative; 42 percent favored the Bustleton Avenue alternative; 5 percent favored the Byberry Road Upgrade alternative; and the question was not answered on 8 percent of the surveys.

In response to the statement, "It is important to improve conditions on Evans Road and Byberry Road," 52 percent strongly agreed; 21 percent agreed; 15 percent strongly disagreed; 9 percent were neutral; and 3 percent disagreed.

Of the 1,331 respondents, 48 percent were from Philadelphia; 37 percent were from Lower Moreland Township; 1 percent was from Willow Grove; and 14 percent lived in other communities.

The survey consisted of 998 responses that PENNDOT received at its January 29 public meeting on the Woodhaven Road Improvement project. Then following the public meeting and up to February 8, PENNDOT received 319 completed surveys on the project web site -- www.woodhavenroad.com -- and five letters and nine e-mails.

Under the Woodhaven Road Environmental Impact Study, PENNDOT is evaluating alternatives to improve travel through the study area that stretches from the existing Woodhaven Road Expressway in Philadelphia into Lower Moreland Township. The alternatives developed to address recent traffic projections involve the Byberry Road upgrade, the Woodhaven Road Extension and the Bustleton Avenue improvement.

Since 1993, PENNDOT has investigated 13 improvement alternatives to relieve traffic congestion in this part of Northeast Philadelphia and eastern Montgomery County.

McCormick Taylor and Associates of Philadelphia is the engineering firm conducting the study for PENNDOT.
