The Woodhaven Road/PA 63 Expressway is located in the Somerton section of Northeast Philadelphia, connecting I-95 and U.S. Route 1 (The Roosevelt Boulevard). The existing 3.8-mile section of Woodhaven Expressway is a six-lane, limited-access highway that ends just to the west of U.S. 1 where local and regional traffic continuing west must exit via Evans Street to Byberry Road. As motorists exit the Woodhaven Expressway onto local roads, lanes are immediately reduced from six to two, creating severe traffic congestion on Evans Street and Byberry Road.
The project area includes the current transition of the Woodhaven Expressway as it exits onto Evans Street just west of U.S. 1 in the City of Philadelphia, and continues westward along Byberry Road. In addition, the study area continues north from the Byberry Road intersection with Bustleton Avenue to County Line Road, and westward from Bustleton Avenue along County Line Road through Lower Moreland Township in Montgomery County and Lower Southampton Township in Bucks County to 1,000 feet west of New Road in Upper Southampton Township, Bucks County.
The study area boundary also includes the extension of Northeast Boulevard north to the Byberry Road and Worthington Road intersection in the City of Philadelphia. In addition, it includes the reserved right-of-way near the Westwood neighborhood in Lower Moreland Township, Montgomery County, and continues westward along Byberry Road to Huntingdon Pike. Finally, the project area follows north along Huntingdon Pike from Byberry Road to County Line Road.
