Community Connections is about providing traffic relief for residents along Byberry Road in Philadelphia. It can do this by creating new connections and travel choices within the Somerton community. Here is a brief description of the core roadway improvement currently being considered by PennDOT:
- The Woodhaven Expressway would end at the Route 1 interchange. West of Route 1, a new parkway facility would begin. To accommodate the new parkway concept, two ramps of the Route 1 interchange would be modified and accessed from a signalized intersection. The Evans Street connection to Byberry Road would remain, but its intersection with the new parkway would also be signalized. West of Evans Street, the new road would be stepped-down to become a two-lane (one lane in each direction), lower-speed parkway as it approaches the CSX railroad tracks.
|
Why traffic signals?
Traffic signals, primarily used to manage traffic movements at intersections, can be introduced at the Route 1 interchange to provide a transition between the expressway traffic and the local roadway network.

- The two-lane road would cross the CSX Railroad tracks on a new, two-lane bridge (one lane in each direction), replacing the temporary bridge that's there now. This road would continue as an at-grade, two-lane parkway through the PennDOT right-of-way to Bustleton Avenue. The parkway could also include pedestrian-scale lighting and landscaping. This stretch of roadway would intersect existing, and perhaps new, neighborhood streets. Some intersections could be signalized.

Why a two-lane bridge?
PennDOT has heard from many residents that the local roadway network needs traffic relief, not additional capacity or increased traffic volumes. A four-lane bridge could attract new traffic into the neighborhood. Therefore, the previously proposed four-lane bridge was removed from consideration. PennDOT now proposes to maintain a two-lane crossing (one lane in each direction) over the CSX tracks, as it is today.

- Byberry Road would no longer cross the CSX Railroad tracks. Through-traffic would use the new parkway. Byberry Road would have a cul-de-sac on either side of the new bridge, and could again be used as a neighborhood main street, serving Somerton residents and businesses.
- Worthington Road would be lengthened southward to provide a connection with the new parkway. This will improve local traffic circulation. Motorists will be able to access the parkway without having to take trips down neighborhood side-streets.
- Intersections in the area would be analyzed to determine any other necessary improvements. This, along with other aspects of Community Connections, is similar to previous transportation proposals submitted by local organizations and residents.
